Resolution
WHEREAS, President Ronald Reagan had dismissed the nine members
of the first ever Native Hawaiian Commission, which was created
after a ten-year effort to conduct a study of the culture, needs
and concerns of the Native Hawaiians; and
WHEREAS, this unilateral action appears to be of questionable
legality inasmuch as the commission was approved by the Congress of
the United States of America and was to be funded by the U.S. Senate;
and
WHEREAS, it has been reported that President Reagan is now plan-
ning to reconstitute the Native Hawaiians Study Commission with the
naming of nine new members, which is indeed very welcomed news and
is truly a fair and reasonable course of action to take; and
WHEREAS, the convening of this commission will culminate many
years of dedicated efforts of the Hawaiian people, and it will provide
the opportunity for the bi-partisan commission to review a highly
emotional and legitimate concern which is whether the U.S. Government
owes anything to the genetic descendants of the original settlers of
the Hawaiian Islands.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it endorses and commends President Reagan for his positive
attitude in activating the Native Hawaiian Study Commission and urges
his expeditious naming of these commissioners so they can commence
with what is destined to be an historical undertaking.
'BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
is instructed to remit true copies of this resolution to
President Ronald Reagan; U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye; U.S. Senator
Spark M. Matsunaga; U.S. Representative Daniel Akaka; and U.S. Repre-
sentative Cecil Heftel.
