Resolution
WHEREAS, the Sexual Assault Support Service operating through
the Hawaii Island YWCA, provides important and much needed services
to victims of sexual assault by providing emergency and follow-up
medical aid, and social and legal assistance; and
WHEREAS, this program was first started in 1978, in response to
the needs expressed by sexually abused victims and by the concerned
agencies in the communities, is a unique service as it offers on a
county -wide basis, a 24-hour crisis intervention hotline, medical
and legal information, follow-up counseling and is continuously
involved in a variety of prevention programs; and
WHEREAS, the Sexual Assault Support Service has had to work
closely and effectively with all the agencies concerned with this
serious problem, has received letters of endorsement from these
agencies, Public Schools, Hilo Hospital, Hawaii Police Department,
Department of Health, and the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney,
attesting to the necessity and success of'its efforts; and
WHEREAS, funds will be required to insure the continuance of
this program, which in fiscal year 1979-80 handled over two thousand
people, as patients or clients of the other services offered.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it supports the aims of the Sexual Assault Support
Service and urges the State Legislature to approve this agency's
request for funds, and also asks that an audit be sanctioned on its
operations for the purposes of evaluation and self-improvement.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
remit true copies of this resolution to Senate President
Richard Wong; House Speaker Henry Peters; Senators Dante Carpenter,
Richard Henderson, John S. Ushijima; Representative Andrew Levin,
Richard Matsuura, Herbert Segawa, Yoshito Takamine, Virginia Isbell,
and Carole Vasconcellos, Program Services Director.
