Resolution
WHEREAS, as the center of tourism in Hilo, the Banyan Peninsula:
offers our visitors a quaint and attractive setting found nowhere
else in the State; and
WHEREAS, the hotels and businesses on Banyan Peninsular have
always taken pride in their establishments and lush surroundings
and have, in the past, cooperated fully with the State and County
to maintain the beauty of the area; and
WHEREAS, since going out of business several years ago, the
Orchid Island Hotel, once the pride of the Peninsular, has been
allowed to deteriorate to the point where it is presently an
unsightly safety hazard; and
WHEREAS, the building, as_it now stands, would only serve to
undo any effort to further enhance the Banyan Peninsular as a
visitor destination spot; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it requests the Department of Public Works to
enforce Chapter 15, Section 203, of the Building Code which calls
for the inspection of a structure deemed dilapidated and a hazard
to public safety.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the owner be notified of all defects
found and given the alternatives of repairing the building or com-
mencing with its demolition as provided by law.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that true copies of this resolution be
remitted to Edward Harada, Chief Engineer, of the Public Works
Department; the Department of Land and Natural Resources, State of
Hawaii and Hoshi International, Inc.
