HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 047 Draft 01 1980-1984County of Hawaii—State of Hawaii Resolution No. 41 si WHEREAS, on November 21, 1980, the State Historic Preservation Officer recommended that the entire Island of Kaho'olawe be registered as an archaeological district on the National Register of Historic Places; and WHEREAS, on January 28, 1981, the Keeper of the National Register has determined that the entire Island of Kaho'olawe is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places; and WHEREAS, the Kaho'olawe survey covered 29,000 acres and was considered one of the largest research projects ever conducted in the United States and disclosed that there were 544 archaeological sites; and WHEREAS, after four years of survey, the Navy's archaeological consultant, Hawaii Marine Research, Inc., provided information on the cultural, religious, subsistence, habitation, demographic, and political patterns of the pre -contact Native Hawaiians; and WHEREAS, the Protect Kaho'olawe'Ohana has for many years led the struggle to emancipate the Island of Kaho'olawe from the United States Navy's use for target practice; and WHEREAS, Maui County Mayor Hannibal Tavares and the State Board of Land and Natural Resources endorsed the nomination of the entire Island of Kaho'olawe to the National Register; and WHEREAS, the listing of Kaho'olawe Island on the National Register will provide the Navy, the Department of the Interior and the National Advisory Council for Historic Preservation a dialogue in developing a mutually agreeable resources protection plan. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it fully supports the nomination of the Island of Kaho'olawe on the National Register of Historic Places. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit true copies of this resolution to The Honorable Ronald Reagan, President of the United States; United States Senators Daniel K. Inouye and Spark Matsunaga; United States Representatives Dan Akaka and Cecil Heftel; The Secretary of Navy; the Keeper of the National Register; the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation; the Hawaii Historic Places Review Board; the Protect Kaho'olawe 'Ohana; Board of Land and Natural Resources, State of Hawaii; and Mayor Hannibal Tavares, Maui County.
