Resolution
WHEREAS, current national trends promoting physical fitness and competitive
sports have had a visible impact on sports -loving and health -conscious Big
Islanders; and
WHEREAS, the fierce competition for certain recreational facilities and the
invasion of our highways by a growing legion of athletes, joggers and cyclists
of all ages suggest that Big Islanders are responding enthusiastically to such
trends; and
WHEREAS, population growth and the attendant demand created by school as
well as community needs for gymnasium use have rendered existing facilities at
Honokaa and Konawaena High Schools inadequate; and
WHEREAS, a new gym facility would be a timely addition to the ultra -modern
recreational complex in Honokaa and an appropriate climax to a 14 -year effort
by a patient community; and
WHEREAS, a new gym for North Kona would help to alleviate the pressures at
the Konawaena gymnasium and provide the residents of the fastest growing district
on the Big Island with an essential facility that would accommodate present and
future needs for an indoor recreational facility.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that
it include as priority items in the County CIP Budget for FY 1981-82, adequate
funding for new gymnasiums at Honokaa and North Kona.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be transmitted to
Mayor Herbert T. Matayoshi; State Representatives Yoshito Takamine and
Virginia Isbell; Mrs. Francis McGough, President of the Honokaa Community
Development Council; Edwin Castillo, President of the Honokaa Businessmen's
Association; Miles Nakamura, President of the Honokaa School PTSA and Alan Pratt,
President of the Kona Coast Chamber of Commerce.
