WHEREAS, October 1, 1981, marks the 24th Anniversary of United
Airlines,' service to the Big Island; and
WHEREAS, since its inaugural weekly flight in 1967, United has
demonstrated increasing confidence in the Big Island by gradually
increasing its service to the Island while other major carriers were
phasing out their Hilo operations; and
WHEREAS, as the only major national airline still.serving the island
of Hawaii, United has lived up to its commitment to the people of the Big
Island that it is here to stay; and
WHEREAS, this commitment was further enhanced by United's recent
announcement that it plans to resume daily flights to Hilo on October 7,
1981, following a temporary cutback in services earlier this year as the
result of adverse economic conditions; and
WHEREAS, with United Airlines as one of its biggest boosters and
promoters, the island of Hawaii has gained national exposure and
recognition as "the other Hawaii".
NOWT THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII
that it expresses its appreciation and mahalo to United Airlines for its
fourteen years of unwavering confidence and promotion of the Big Island
as a major visitor destination area and for its commitment to the people
of this island,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council considers United's 14th
Anniversary in Hilo as an appropriate occasion to proclaim United
Airlines as the official mainland air carrier for the County of Hawaii.
BE IT FURTHL•'R RESOLVED that true copies of this resolution be
transmitted to Mr. Eddie E. Carlson, Chairman of the Board, UAL, Inc.;
Mr. Dick R. G. Ferris, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of UAL, Inc.,
and President, UAL, Inc.; Mr. Richard Post, Vice President, Hawaii
Region; Mr. Stanley Randolph, Regional Sales Manager; Mr. Donn Nishimura$
Hilo Office Manager and !Mayor Herbert Matayoshi.
