County of Hawaii -'State of Hawaii
Resolution
WHEREAS, the Big Island's promising and expanding anthurium
industry is being threatened by a bacterial blight causing pale,
bleached flowers and prematurely yellow leaves which fall easily -
off the plant; and
WHEREAS, this situation is of serious concern to the over 300
anthurium farmers on this island, as their 400 acres are responsible
for most of the record-setting $6.6 million gross sales of 1.9 million
dozen anthuriums marketed in 1980; and
WHEREAS, it is of vital importance that concerted efforts be
immediately initiated by the county and the state to investigate,
rese arch and implement measures which will help to eradicate or
satisfactorily control this bacterial blight which has been confirmed
in 13 cases in Hawaii County this summer.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it recognizes the urgency to take remedial and preventative
actions on the anthurium blight problem which adversely affects an
important economic endeavor and that it requests that the county
administration and the state confer at their earliest convenience
to address and hopefully resolve this community concern.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of the this resolution be
transmitted to Mayor Herbert T. Matayoshl; Chairman of the State
Department of Agriculture, Jack K. Suwa; President of the Anthurium
Association of Hawaii, Daniel Hata; and President of the Farm Bureau
of Hawaii, Jim McCulley.
