County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii
Resolution
WHEREAS, under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP),
products from less-developed countries are eligible for duty-free
import if they do not provide significant competition to domestic
products; and
WHEREAS, the Office of the United States Trade Representative
is reviewing petitions for the duty-free import of mangoes, sweet
ginger and papayas from Jamaica and fresh pineapples from Thailand
and Mexico; and
WHEREAS, Senator Daniel K. Inouye is strongly opposed to granting
duty-free treatment of these products because of their harmful impact
on Hawaii producers which ultimately will result in unfair competition
to Big Island farmers who ship tons of papayas and ginger to the
American market.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII wholeheartedly supports the position of Senator Inouye
and respectfully requests the Office of the United States Trade
Representative to consider the potential harm in allowing duty-free
import of these products to the Hawaii economy in their deliberations.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit a copy of this resolution to President Ronald Reagan, Office
of the United States Trade Representatives and to members of the
Hawaii Congressional delegation_
