RESOLUTION NO. 181 81
WHEREAS, U. S. Senator Spark M. Matsunac7a co-sponsored a
bill which provided for the establishment of an Institute for
Native American Culture and Art Development Act and testified
at the hearing recommending early enactment of the bill before
the Senate Select Committee on Indian Affairs; and
Tr, IEREAS, Senator Matsunaga proposed that the Institi.ite Board
could provide the institutional support needed to help preserve
and promote Native Hawaiian culture and art and further encouraged
the establishment of pe=anent sites in Hawaii and Alaska for
activities �,ahlch baneiit�:the Native Arier_ican: and
WHEREAS, one of the 1978 amendments to the Hawaii State
Constitution adopted by the voters of Hawaii states, "The State
shall promote the study of Hawaiian culture, history and language"
is in consonance with the objective of the proposed Institute; and
WHEPEAS, recently the Office of Hawaiian F_ffa.ir, Board of
Trustees adopted a 5 point program and considered as a top priority
the (finvelopi_ng of the "YFa4raiian Renaissance" which is the-, promotion
of the study of Hawaiian culture, history and language.
NOWT T112R.EF'ORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL Or THE COU-NTY
OF HAOt'AII that it extends its support for the estah7 inl'---nc t of an
Institute for Native American Culture and Art= Devel'onment Board and
requests favorable passage from the Senate Select Comanittee on
Indian Affairs when Congress returns from their August recess.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council axpresses its deep
appreciation and mahalo to .Senator Spark M. MatSLLnaCSc1 for `r.i5
initiative in pursuing Federal assistance in order to hasten the
implementation of "_IaT-Taiian Renaissance".
13E IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit a. copy of this resolution to the honorable Spark 14. Matsunaga,
U. S. Senator, and to the Chairman of the Senate Select Cor:rzittee on
Indian Affairs.
