County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii
Resolution
WHEREAS, the Big Island with 4,000 square miles of land area and a
population of 90,000 is beginning to realize much of its growth potentials-; and
WHEREAS, it has long been recognized that the Saddle Road, despite i,ts
deteriorated and ill -designed configuration., is a shorter route connecting the
east and west sides of the island; and
WHEREAS, the astronomy industry, utilizing our mountain peaks have, also
created interest in expanding the use of the Hale Pohaku site as amid -level
facility; and
WHEREAS, the military has also indicated plans to expand the training
program at the Pohakuloa Training Area which will result in increased use of
the Saddle Road; and
WHEREAS, the joint committee comprised of the Hawaii Island Chamber of
Commerce, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Kona Coast
Chamber of Commerce and the Hawaii Island Contractors' Association have
recognized the necessity of a cross -island highway and have worked with the
State's Department of Transportation to develop a plan to satisfy this vital
need,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that
it fully supports the coals, objectives and plan for the cross -island highway
drafted by the joint committee of the three chambers of commerce and the
contractors's association.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be forwarded to The
Honorable Daniel K. Inouye, U. S. Senator; The Honorable Spark Matsunaga,
U., S. Senator; The Honorable Daniel Akaka, U. S. Congressman; The Honorable
Cecil Heftel, U. S. Congressman; The Honorable George R. A.riyoshi, Governor of
the State of Hawaii; The Honorable Richard Wong, President of the Hawaii State
Senate; The Honorable Henry Peters, Speaker of the Hawaii State House of
Representatives; Dr. Ryokichi Higashionna, Director of Transportation, State
of Hawaii; The Honorable Herbert T. Matayoshi, Mayor of the County of Hawaii;
the Kona Coast Chamber of Commerce; the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce; the
Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Hawaii Island Contractors'
Association.
