County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii
Resolution
WHEREAS, the Keahole Airport Terminal in Kona is today one of
the most beautiful and architectually unique public facilities in the
State of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, since its completion nearly a decade ago, the Terminal
has adequately served the needs of locals and visitors alike in their
travels to and from destinations throughout the State; and
WHEREAS, it is apparent that although aesthetics was a major
criteria in the design of the facility, little consideration was given
to future expansion of the Terminal to accommodate more than the two
current regularly scheduled interisland air carriers; and
WHEREAS, the lack of adequate terminal facilities at Keahole is
one of the reasons that has prevented a third carrier from serving Kona.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it requests the State Department of Transportation to
facilitate plans to expand the Keahole Airport Terminal to accommodate
additional carriers.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that true copies of this resolution be
transmitted to The Honorable Governor George R. Ariyoshi; Mr. Ryokichi
Higashionna, Director, State Department of Transportation; Senate
President Richard S. H. Wong; Speaker of the House Henry Peters; and
all Big Island State Legislators.
