RESOLUTION NO. '(;7 8I,

LSTHEREAS, on May 1, 1981, with Mr. Joseph Freitas Miranda as
president, a nine -member charter of the non-profit Portuguese
Geneological Society of Hawaii was organized to promote the
culture of the Portuguese people of Hawaii and to act as a
repository for information and data of the immigrants who arrived
In Hawaii from Portugal over a century ago; and
WHEREAS, these Portuguese immigrants who made the perilous
15,000 -mile journey to work on the sugar plantations in Hawaii,
adapted themselves well to the islands and took deep root,
inter -marrying with the natives and contributing their share to
the present day melting pot of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the Portuguese are credited with introducing the
ukulele and guitar to supplement the native drums previously used
with Hawaiian hulas and, most notably, introducing the Portuguese
sweet bread, sausage and malasadas which have become standard fare
in the eating habits of local families; and
WHEREAS, their patois is embedded in the local colloquial
"pidgin" and Is the source of approximately 90 wards presently
spoken in Japanese.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it congratulates the birth of the Portuguese
Geneological Society of Hawaii on the island of Hawaii and
commends the charter members for their timely organization with
the purpose of compiling and documenting the written and oral
history of the Portuguese people of Hawaii.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
remit copies of this resolution to Mr,. Joseph Freitas Miranda,
PrenIdent of the Portuguese Geneological Society of Hawaii; and
to Consul John Henry Felix, Ph D., Consulate of Portugal.
