Resolution No. 210 ss,
WHEREAS, the United States Army's Pohakuloa Training Area
(PTA) is the largest Army installation in the State of Hawaii and
serves as the primary training facility for both Active and Reserve
Components of the Army; and
WHEREAS, military personnel assigned to PTA, either permanently
or for short-term training exercises, have an impact on the environ-
ment and surrounding communities; and
WHEREAS, the 2Sth Infantry Division, based at Schofield Barracks,
Oahu, will soon begin training exercise "Operation Thunderbolt",
involving more than 4,000 troops; and
WHEREAS, the Division's Commanding General and subordinate unit
commanders have implemented requirements to raise troop sensitivity
and awareness to the environment by designating areas wherein
endangered plants and birds exist as limited activity zones; and
WHEREAS, the Deputy Installation Commander, PTA, has instilled
in the permanently assigned personnel the pride of maintaining the
facility in excellent condition thereby conveying that example to
transient troops; and
WHEREAS, Division men and equipment are involved in realistic
training projects such as repairing roads, gates and fence lines
to the benefit of the military as well as neighboring ranchers and
farmers.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that Major General Alexander M. Weyand, Commanding General,
25th Infantry Division, United States Army, and his unit commanders be
commended for their professionalism in the manner in which they conduct
training without jeopardizing the environment, surrounding communities.
and the natural habitat of indigenous plants and birds.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the residents of Hawaii County
extend their appreciation to the military for their neighborly
contribution to the Big Island community in the form of work
projects accomplished and wish them well in their forthcoming
training exercise.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
is hereby instructed to remit true copies of this resolution to
Major General Alexander M. Weyand, Commanding General, 25th Infantry
Division and Lieutenant Colonel, William E. Tyson, Deputy Installation
Commander, Pohakuloa Training Area.
