County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii
Resolution
WHEREAS, agricultural expansion and development is an important
goal of our state and county government; and
WHEREAS, in achieving this end, the development of a reliable
and adequate source of water becomes paramount; and
WHEREAS, the Kohala Ditch System, an existing private irrigation
system owned by the Kohala Corporation, provides, for a percentage
of the year, an adequate agricultural water source; and
WHEREAS, the Kohala Ditch System, with an augmentation from well
sources, can provide a reliable year --round water supply for agricultural
and domestic expansion; and
WHEREAS, the Council of the County of Hawaii understands that the
Kohala Corporation is receptive of proposals regarding to the improvement,
expansion and transfer of the Kohala Ditch System which would open
thousands of acres to productive agricultural efforts.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it urges the Department of Land and Natural Resources to
meet with the Kohala Corporation and discuss methods of improvement,
expansion and transfer of the Kohala Ditch System to the State which
will firmly establish the Ditch System as a reliable water source
for the people of Hawaii affording agricultural expansion and economic
development.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit copies of this Resolution to the Honorable George R. Ariyoshi,
Governor of the State of Hawaii; Mr. Susumu Ono, -Chairman, Board of
Land and Natural Resources; Mr. Jack Suwa,_Director, Department of
Agriculture; Mr. William Sewake, Manager, Department of Water Supply,
and to Mr. Robert Tsuyemura, Kohala Corporation.
