RESOLUTION NO. 207 81
WHEREAS, the Church of the Holy Cross is celebrating 1981 as
Its 90th Anniversary (1891-1981) ; and
WHEREAS, the theme "Ever Renewing Life" offers the opportunity
to reflect upon the accomplishments and to recognize the hardships
which the charter members of the Hilo Japanese Christian Church
had endured so that the future generations would prosper; and
WHERZAS, the selection of the Bamboo as its symbol is most
appropriate as it projects orderly growth and is always reaching
skyward, which resembles and amplifies the past history of the
Church's ambitious goals and objectives; and
WHEREAS, under the initial leadership of Reverend .tiro Okabe,
the Hilo Japanese Christian Church was first founded on January
18, 1891, with a charter m2ml>ershtp of 72 parishioners and in 1942
the name_ was cisan�;ed to the Church of the Holy Cross,
i lIEREAS, subsequent to the snarly mIs sl.onary years under
Reverend Okabe, Reverend Kwan HISuchi provided 17 years of
leadership providing the necessary stability and direction; the
1940's and 50's saw a new era of readjustments, evaluations and
setting of now Goals as World War 11 brought new perspectives; the
60's and 7U's, again saw a new movement in the Church, with the
establishrnant of -,lore suxilliary organIza.tions and activities,
contributing to the growth and progress of the Church; and
WHEREAS, as the 80's are upon us, the Church has realized the
need for to i --rani a planning, especially in the area of
visualizing the future of the Lord's ml.ssion,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it congratulates the Church of the Holy Cross upon its
celebration of its 90th Anniversary and that it be encouraged to
continua its many contributions to our society.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit a true copy of this resolution to Pastor Susumu Yamane of
the Church of the Holy Cross.
