HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 203 Draft 01 1980-1984County of Hawaii - State of Hawaii Resolution WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii has established a Traffic Enforcement Task Force to work toward the reduction of traffic accident incidence and fatalities; and WHEREAS, since the inception of the Traffic Enforcement Task Force in 1979, actual traffic accident incidence and fatalities have decreased in spite of increases in the number of drivers and automobiles on our highways, attributing to the effectiveness of the active and highly visible activities of our task force; and WHEREAS, Federal budgetary program cuts have mandated program reductions and terminations resulting in the proposed cessation of selective traffic enforcement efforts in the County of Hawaii; and WHEREAS, Federal funding for enforcing our 55 mile per hour speed laws which furthers our energy conservation needs and reaffirms our recognition of safe and reasonable driving speeds, still exists within our State, Regional, and National budgets; and WHEREAS, these funds could be directed to effective law enforcement activities especially on the island of Hawaii, where approximately 83% of our State's 55 MPH highways are located, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it urges Congressional interest and concern as to the application of Federal 55 MPH enforcement funding to the Hawaii County Police Traffic Enforcement Unit. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit true copies of this resolution to the Honorable Daniel K. Inouye, U. S. Senator; the Honorable Spark M. Matsunaga, U. S. Senator; the Honorable Daniel K. Akaka, U. S. Congressman; the Honorable Cecil Heftel, U. S. Congressman; Mr. Calvin Burkhart, Regional Administrator, National Highway Safety Administration; Mr. E. H. (Bud) Miller, State Program Director, National Highway Safety Administration; and Dr. Ryokichi Higashionna, State Director of Transportation. Dated at Hilo, Hawaii, this 7th day of October 1981.
