RESOLUTION NO. 106 81

WHEREAS, plans are presently being formulated to commemorate
the 100th Anniversary of the arrival of the first German immigrants
to the Hawaiian islands; and
WHEREAS, this migration from Germany toot place during the
period of 1801 'through 1897, and brought in an estimated 1400 new
inhabitants to Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, while the German immigrants" were' few in numbers, as
compared to the other ethnic groups which preceded them, they -ars
credited to have played an important role in the development of .our
islands' unique multi -cultural lifestyle a`s well an. 'the progress of
our 'various and successful corrimer. cial ventures; and
WHEREAS, reminders of the influence of these pioneers, who were
first employed as overseers and mechanics and ultimately work;ed�
themselves up in more responsible positions on the plantatiori's, are
more visible on the island of Kauai where the major settlement.iaas
made, are the well"khown Lihue Lutheran Church, the German rorest
and the German =type architecture which is 1'3'ti.11 in evidence irs' many
of Lihue's main street buildings; and
WHEREAS, although the German migration to HawaX:C was`short�lived;
their earlier prominence and contributions upon the economic and
social well-being of our communities are duly documented and
deserving of appropriate recognition; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it extends its congratulations and best wishes to the
German population of the State of Hawaii, as they commemorate their
centennial anniversary to mark the many achievements and positive
influences they have contributed towards Hawaii's image as the
cultural melting pot of the world and our successes in racial./ethnic
tolerance and harmony.
BE TO" FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
remit a true copy of -this resolution to the Honorary Consul,
Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Gunter von Hamm, with the Hawaii
County Council's wishes for continued contributions of the German
people to the progress and well --being of Hawaii.
