Resolution
WHEREAS, emergency medical services have become a vital part
of the necessary health services to the people of the Big Island;
and
WHEREAS, since its inception as a. function of the fire rescue
unit of the County Fire Department in 1973, the services have
gradually grown to include the districts of Hilo, Kona, Kohala and
Puna; and
WHEREAS, Act 148, Session Laws of Hawaii 1978 incorporated
the service into the statewide system of comprehensive medical
services under the State Department of Health; and
WHEREAS, of the districts on the Big Island currently without
any emergency medical services units, Ka'u, South Kona and Hamakua
are in dire need of such services because of the increasing
in -migration of residents to the districts and the distance•of'
the population centers to the nearest EMS units in Puna, Kona and
Kohala.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it requests the State Department of Health to
expand its emergency medical services to include the Districts of
Ka'u, South Kona and Hamakua.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the requested EMS units be located
at the existing fire stations in Pahala, Captain Cook and Honokaa.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that true copies of this Resolution
be transmitted to Mr. George Yuen, Director, State Department of
Health and Herbert Matayoshi, Mayor, County of Hawaii.
