HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 160 Draft 01 1980-1984RESOLUTION NO. 160 81 WHEREAS, the 23rd Annual Hawaiian InternatInnal Billfish Tournament (HIBT) will commence on Monday, July 27 and continue through Friday, July.31, 1981, and over seventy fishing teams with more than 300 big game fishermen are expected to respond to the starting gain; and WHEREAS, the theme for this year's tournament is "Expanding Man's Knowledge of the Sea", and will include a day set aside for: a special Tag -and -Release format which will assist marine scientists In tracking and learning more about the habits of Hawaii's marlin' population; and WHEREAS, this Anternational sporting and recreational exttra-. vaganza will include teams,from the United States and twenty foreign countries and these world-class anglers will be _vying for the prestigious championship of this renowned billfish tournament3 and WHEREAS, besides the colorful opening, day ceremonies the traditional Billfish Aloha Parade and the actual competition itself, the pre and post tournament activities are expected to attract over ten thousand visitors who will use the entire inven- tory, of 4,192 hotel and condo units in the :kailua to Keauhou area, and spend an estimated.$4 million within this two week span. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it recognition of the stature and esteem that the HIBT has created for theBBig island, for the Aloha Spirit that has been nurtured between people and nations and for the needed economic roost that our island will enjoy, it extends its commendations to the organiaere and the many volunteers who have helped year after year to make this event,one of the major attractions that the'Big Island is now noted for. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that true copies of this resolution be transmitted to Chairman of the Board of the Hawaiian International Billftah'-,association, Peter S. Fithian; Executive Directors Jim Sutherland and President of the Kona Coast Chamber of Commerce, Alan J. Pratt; along with the Hawaii County Council's wishes for continued success..
