Your Committee on Public Works and Intergovernmental Relations, to which was referred
Communication No. 486, regarding Resolution 226-09, reports as follows:
Resolution 226-09, transmitted by Council Member Dennis Onishi, via Communication No. 486 dated
August 17, 2009, urging the Hawaii State Board of Education to move the Keaukaha School Cafeteria
Project into the Top Ten on The Department of Education CIP Allotment Priority List.
There was testimony from members of public, including two sixth grade students, in support of the
proposed resolution.
Committee Chair Brenda .1. Ford relinquished her seat to Committee Vice Chair Kelly Greenwell.
Mr. Onishi provided pictures of Keaukaha School Cafeteria and commented that overcrowded,
dilapidated conditions violate fire safety and OSHA regulations. Furthermore, improper food preparation
due to space limitations, obsolete equipment, and cramped and deteriorated working conditions is an
unhealthy and dangerous environment for the children and school employees. He seeks the support of his
colleagues on this proposed resolution.
Your Committee on Public Works and Intergovernmental Relations is in accord with the purpose and
intent of Resolution 226-09, and recommends its adoption.
