<br />COUNTY OF HAWAI'I <br /> <br /> <br />STATE OF HAWAI'I <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. <br /> <br />242 09 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION REGARDING ISLANDWIDE BICYCLE SAFETY. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, bicycling and other physical recreational sports (such as the Ford Ironman <br />World Championship) contribute to the economy and the character of this Island; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, these activities may influence the present and future planning of our <br />communities; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, recent highway improvements within and around Kailua Village have <br />included striping for both automobile and bicycle traffic; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, bicycles and automobiles should not be considered compatible when <br />operated within the same system especially in notable areas where significant danger may exist; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, accidents have resulted where coexistence occurs, and in the future may <br />eventually result in serious injury or fatality; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAW AI'I that it <br />will initiate near-term remedies for those areas deemed hazardous, and address long-term design <br />and planning for a safe bicycle system. <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Hawai'i County Council promote the process <br />of visioning the bicycle system as a predominant feature ofIslandwide planning. <br /> <br />Page 1 of2 <br />
