The passage of this Bill is essential for those of us who wish to establish some kind
of a dog park on the Big island (preferably in Kona). Our dogs currently have no place to
run free and very little in the way of safe places to walk on a leash. All County
facilities, including beaches, parks, ball fields, etc. are not open to dogs even on a
leash. It is true that we can walk our dogs on Alii drive but this is not an ideal
situation for the dogs, for us or for the many tourists who visit our island. It is
essemtial that dogs have some place inwhich they can socialize with each other and thus
learn how to behave properly when around people especially strangers. Dogs also need space
in which to run free and express their true natures and to learn how to interact with each
other and with humans. The support of the Council to change the current retrictive "Leash
Laws" would bring us into line with the other islands such as Oahu and Maui. It is ironic
that we have the most alnd of all the islands and yet we cannot spare any for our dogs!
Please help us to be kinder to 'Man's Best friend'. Thank you.
