RESOLUTION NO: 281-00 Draft 2
A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE ACCEPTANCE OF A DONATION OF AN "OJIZO-SAMA"
STATUE.
WHEREAS, the Japanese Community Association of Hawaii has donated an
"Ojizo-Sama" statue to the County of Hawaii to be placed in the Lili`uokalani Gardens in Hilo,
Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, Jizo Bosatsu (Bodhisattva Jizo) is one of the most popular religious figures
in Japanese Buddhist lore and is affectionately known as "Ojizo-Sama". It is best known as the
guardian of children and the special protector of children who die at a young age. In addition,
Jizo Bosatsu is considered to be the protector of travelers and his statues are often enshrined
along busy roadways; and
WHEREAS, the ornamental statue will enhance the appearance of Lili`uokalani Gardens,
an authentic Japanese park which concept began in 1914, and will be recognized by many of the
visitors from the Orient; and
WHEREAS, the donation, with an approximate value of One Thousand Five Hundred
and No/100 ($1,500.00), will be used by the Department of Parks and Recreation at its
Lili`uokalani Gardens; and
WHEREAS, Article XIII, Section 13-12 of the Hawaii County Charter provides that the
Council, on behalf of the County, may accept gifts of donations of money, securities, or other
personal property or of real estate or any interest in real estate.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that in accordance with Article XIII, Section 13-12 ofthe Hawaii County Charter, the
Department of Parks and Recreation is authorized to accept the "Ojizo-Sama" statue.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this donation would be assigned to Lili`uokalani
Gardens of the Department of Pazks and Recreation to benefit the people of the Island of
Hawaii.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk is hereby directed to forward
copies of this resolution to Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro, Juliette Tulang, Director of the
Department of Parks and Recreation and the Japanese Community Association of Hawaii.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that a letter of appreciation be sent to Mr. Yukio Takeya,
President of the Japanese Community Association of Hawaii at P.O. Box 1124, Hilo, Hawaii,
96721, acknowledging this generous donation.
