APPROVING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A SISTER-CITY RELATIONSHIP
BETWEEN SUMOTO CITY (AWAJI ISLAND), JAPAN AND THE COUNTY OF
HAWAI I
WHEREAS, the Mayor and the Council of Hawaii County have jointly
promoted aSister-City program to foster friendship and understanding among all
of the world, particularly those in the Pacific Basin; and
WHEREAS, such aSister-City program would benefit the people of the
affiliated cities through the exchange of cultural exhibits, educational programs,
agricultural pursuits, information relative to economic development of mutual
interest, and other matters of common interest; and
WHEREAS, contacts have been made between officials of the
government of Sumoto City, Japan and the County of Hawaii to discuss the
establishment of a Sister-City relationship between Sumoto City and the County
of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the Island of Hawaii and Sumoto City are similarly blessed
with natural beauty and industries that include agriculture, fishing and tourism;
and
WHEREAS, during visits and correspondences between the
representatives of the cities, Sumoto City officials have expressed enthusiastic
support of a Sister-City relationship between Sumoto City and the County of
Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii, island of Hawaii, would be pleased and
honored to be affiliated with Sumoto City as a Sister-City; and
WHEREAS, a delegation of County officials, 12 members of the Waiakea
Intermediate School Ukulele Band and members of the Hawaii Tropical Flower
Council (HTFC) visited Sumoto City on July 19-23, 2000, to participate in their
Japan Flora 2000, and Hawaiian Festival; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii Florists and Shippers Association has agreed to
serve as the private sector sponsor as required by Ordinance 93-102, relating to
the establishment of a Sister-City relationship.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that aSister-City program be established between the
County of Hawaii and the good people of Sumoto City; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the mayors of Sumoto City and the
County of Hawaii are hereby requested to execute the documents necessary to
put in effect this relationship.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk transmit copies of this
resolution to Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro, the Mayor of Sumoto City and to
Rudy Legaspi, Protocol Officer.
