Aloha Council members,
Whether or not to endorse this resolution will have to be based on soft statistics.
Generally, it is better to encourage the use of vaccines than to discourage them.
Areas have occasionally let vaccination slip and there is an occasional outbreak of some
virus with the associated mobilization by the CDC to get vaccinations into that area.
Keep in mind that vaccination are not only flu vaccinations but those with high childhood
incidence and even adult onset. The last thing Hawaii would want is for an outbreak of
polio and the major impact that would have on tourism. You need only look back to how Mad
Cow virus affected tourism in England!
If this is seriously being considered for passage, then I would recommend two
clarifications.
1) In the case of a child (by legal definition), the decider should be the parent,
guardian or custodian.
2) As the resolution refers to certain characteristics of the vaccine, there should be a
designated place of reference where people could cite for their reason. The internet is
not good enough. It has become a larg~ cesspool of personal opinion masquerading as fact.
You need peer reviewed sites with the best information available. I would recommend the
state Department of Health or the CDC be referenced in the resolution as a source to
acquire information related to the decision not to have the vaccine.
