HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 045 Draft 01 1972-1976 T ~R 6 County of Hawaii-State of Hawaii Resolution No. WHEREAS, the Council of the County of Hawaii wishes to encourage the enrichment and preservation of the diverse cultural heritage of this Island; and WHEREAS, it is important that symbols of the various ethnic cultures be preserved to help us all recall the past; and WHEREAS, the old Chinese School at 614 Kilauea Avenue is symbolic of the culture of the emigrants from China who helped shape the multi-ethnic culture of Hawaii;,-and WHEREAS, the Chinese communities on the Island of Hawaii and the Island of Oahu in the late 1920's contributed time and money to purchase'the land and build the school so that their culture could be extended; and WHEREAS, the school is representative of the self-sufficiency of our Chinese citizens and their desires for quality education; and WHEREAS, The Hawaii Land Corporation has recognized the importance of protecting and preserving our cultural heritage by renovating the deteriorating Chinese School, converting its interior to a functional office building, but preserving the exterior of the structure and the grounds surrounding it in very nearly the original state; and WHEREAS, the Council of the County of Hawaii is grateful to The Hawaii Land Corporation for its expenditure of funds to employ professional architectural help and to purchase costly materials to preserve this old structure and transform it into an attractive, functional building; COUNTY OF HAWAII--STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION Page 2 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it hereby extends its thanks and congratu- lations to The Hawaii Land Corporation for the sensitivity and concern for the cultural values of the County of Hawaii the company demonstrated in its preservation of the old Chinese School. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk be and is hereby directed to transmit copies of this resolution to Mr. James P. Wohl, president of The Hawaii Land Corporation.
