WHEREAS, DR. FRANCIS F. C. WONG, was born on February 28,
1919, in Pahala, County of Hawaii, State of Hawaii: and
WHEREAS, a graduate of the 1936 Class of Hilo High School,
DR. WONG earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of
Hawaii in 1940 and his Medical Degree at St. Louis University in
1944: and
WHEREAS, DR. WONG was a member of the American Medical
Association, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a past
member of the Hawaii Board of Medical Examiners, and a past
secretary and president of the Hawaii County Medical Society: and
WHEREAS, DR. WONG practiced medicine as a general practitioner
in Hilo from 1948 to 1952 and as a surgeon since 1957: and
WHEREAS, as an officer in the Medical Corps of the United
States Army and Navy, DR. WONG served in World War II, and as a
lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve, DR. WONG served in the
Navy during the Korean conflict: and
WHEREAS, in spite of his busy schedule as a practicing
physician and surgeon, DR. WONG made substantial contributions
to community service and devoted a great deal of his time and
efforts in the following endeavors before his death on September 16,
1971:
Past President, Hilo High School Alumni Association:
Founder and Chairman of the Board, Wanderers Athletic Club:
President, Big Island Amateur Boxing Association;
Past President, Hawaii Island Golf Association:
Past Commissioner, Hawaiian Association of the Amateur
Athletic Union:
Past President, Hawaii Baseball League:
Team Physician for Hilo High School as well as other
school athletic teams, and the Big Island Amateur
Boxing Association for many years: and
Coach, Wanderers Hawaii Senior Basketball Team for
many years:

and
WHEREAS, a teetotaler and non-smoker, DR. WONG was a born
leader of men and lived in an exemplary manner: honesty,
diligence, fair-play, and clean-living being his guiding stars:
and
WHEREAS, DR. WONG maintained a life-long interest in sports
and was widely known for his excellent leadership and whole-hearted
dedication to sports; and

WHEREAS, DR. WONG was twice named as Sportsman of the Year,
being the only sportsman so honored; and
WHEREAS, the Council of the County of Hawaii wishes to join
with all of the people in the County of Hawaii in bestowing
recognition and honor on this erstwhile prominent citizen of Hilo
for his truly outstanding and unmatched contributions and service
to his community,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that the recently constructed grandstand at the Hoolulu
Park Complex be and is hereby renamed the DR. FRANCIS F. C. WONG
GRANDSTAND; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii be and is hereby directed to transmit a true copy of this
resolution to Mrs. Frances Wong, widow of Dr. Francis F. C. Wong.
