HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 098 Draft 01 1972-1976 1 County of Hawaii-State of Hawaii Resolution No. WHEREAS, the State of Hawaii, through the Department of Land and Natural Resources, owns and controls a 5.0-acre parcel of land situated near Coconut Island and adjacent to Liliuokalani Park, Hilo, Hawaii; and WHEREAS, the described parcel of land was leased in 1966 for resort development purposes; and WHEREAS, one of the conditions of the original lease was that the developer-lessee complete the construction of a resort complex on the site by 1968; and WHEREAS, to date the developer-lessee hasi,failed to even begin construction on the described parcel; and WHEREAS, pursuant to the lease, the Department of Land and Natural Resources, through its Board, may declare the developer-lessee to be in default of the lease and may accordingly terminate the lease; and WHEREAS, the prime location of the described parcel is especially suitable for recreational and park purposes; and WHEREAS, the Council of the County of Hawaii firmly believes that a planned economic development of the Big Island involves weighing the economic benefits to be derived from tourist development with providing readily accessible recreational lands for our people of the County and State of.Hawaii; and > WHEREAS, with regard to the described parcel, the Council of the County of Hawaii believes that the long-range interests of the people of the County and State of Hawaii will best be served by preserving the land for park and recreational purposes, either-as an addition to Liliuokalani Park or otherwise, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the Board of Land and Natural Resources be requested to terminate State of Hawaii General Lease Number 3961, and set the leased land aside for public park and recreational purposes. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Honorable John A. Burns, Governor of the State of Hawaii, be requested, upon the recommendation of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, to transfer the described lands to the County of Hawaii by Executive Order to extend the premises of Liliuokalani Park. i '17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk forward copies of this resolution to the Honorable John A.
