HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 115 Draft 01 1972-1976 0 County of Hawaii-State of Hawau Resolution No. 115 WHEREAS, the pineapple industry of Hawaii has declined substantially since 1955 and continues to decline; and WHEREAS, three of the four remaining companies have announced by successive independent action, closings and cutbacks that will reduce Hawaii's pineapple production by one-third within the next three years; and WHEREAS, foreign imports account for 36 per cent to 40 per cent of the U.S. consumption of pineapple; and WHEREAS-, the tariff on pineapple imported from foreign countries is considerably lower than those for comparable crops such as pears, peaches and fruit cocktails; and WHEREAS, export of Hawaiian pineapple and pineapple juice to Japan is presently limited by restrictive Japanese imports, quotas and duties of 55 per cent ad valorem; and WHEREAS, the Japanese import quota and restrictive duties on U.S. pineapples have acted to decline the aggregate pineapple exports from the U.S. and the Ryukyu. Islands to Japan; and WHEREAS, the U.S. is currently involved in trade negotiations with Japan, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that serious consideration be given to the possibility of increasing the availability of the Japanese market for the export of Hawaiian pineapples through the increase of Japanese import quotas and the lowering of restrictive Japanese import tariff on U.S. pineapple. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the U.S. Congress give serious consideration toward increasing the tariff on imported pineapples and pineapple juice to that of an equitable tariff rate levied on comparable crops as pears,.peaches and fruit cocktails. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be and is hereby directed to transmit a true copy of this resolution to the Honorable Richard M. Nixon, President of the United.States of America; the Honorable Daniel K. Inouye, U.S. Senator; the Honorable Hiram L. Fong, U.S. Senator; the Honorable Patsy T. Mink, U.S. Representative; the Honorable Spark M. Matsunaga, U.S.`Representative; and the Honorable John A. Burns, Governor of the State of Hawaii.
