County of Hawaii--State of Hawaii
Resolution
WHEREAS, a new road, known commonly as the New Volcano Road, has been
constructed in the District of South Hilo; County and State of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, a portion of the Old Volcano Road known as the Halemanu Drive
is no longer of any use to the County of Hawaii as''a public roadway; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii 2000 Outdoor Education Center has approval from the
State Department of Land and Natural Resources to utilize 175 acres of State
lands adjoining Halemanu Drive; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii 2000 Outdoor Education Center wishes to close off
public access over the. abandoned portion of Halemanu Drive and restore the
existing gravel road into a scenic walkway; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii .2000 Outdoor Education shall make a request to the
State of Hawaii for leasing of the abandoned road right-of-way and the road-
way shall revert back to the original usage upon termination of the lease;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII
that the portion of the Old Volcano Road,._also known as Halemanu Drive, as
shown in red on the map attached hereto and marked Exhibit A, be and is hereby
declared abandoned as a roadway.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk be authorized and directed
to forward a copy of this resolution to Mr. Sunao Kido, Mr. James Detor, Mr.
Larry Mehau, Mrs. Mildred Yamamoto, Hawaii 2000 and to the Department of
Public Works of the County of Hawaii.
