Resolution No. A-41
WHEREAS, Aloha, American,.Continental, Hawaiian,
Northwest, Pan American, Trans World, United, and Western
Airlines have made known their opposition to the construction
of the $20 million overseas terminal project at Hilo Lyman
Field; and
WHEREAS, in the Transpacific Route Case in 1966, nearly
all of these airlines agreed to the Civil Aeronautics Board
Examiner's Report that there is a need for the use of Hilo
as one of two gateways in the Mainland U.S.-Orient routes;
and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii Island Visitor Industry Association
is presently extensively promoting Hilo and the Island of
Hawaii in continental United States to attract an ever-increasing
number of tourists who will be using the Hilo Gateway; and
WHEREAS, a postponement of construction of the airport
facilities will cause undue hardship to the economy and
general welfare of the people of the County of Hawaii,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that the Governor of the State of Hawaii
deny the request made by Aloha, American, Continental, Hawaiian,
Northwest, Pan American, Trans World, United, and Western
Airlines for postponement of the Hilo Airport facilities
and construction of this much needed facility to proceed
as scheduled by the State.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk of the
County of Hawaii is hereby authorized and directed to transmit
copies of this resolution to the Honorable John A. Burns,
Governor of Hawaii; the. Honorable George Ariyoshi, Lt. Governor
of Hawaii; the Honorable Shunichi Kimura, Mayor of the County
of Hawaii; the Honorable Daniel K. Inouye, Senator, U. S.
Senate; the Honorable Hiram L. Fong, Senator, U. S. Senate;
the Honorable Patsy T. Mink, Member of Congress, U. S. House
of Representatives; and the Honorable Spark M. Matsunaga,
Member of Congress, U. S. House of Representatives; the
Honorable Tadao Beppu, Speaker of the House of Representatives,
State of Hawaii; the Honorable David C. McClung, President
of the.Senate, State of Hawaii; the Honorable Wing Kong Chong,
the Honorable Joseph R. Garcia, Jr., the Honorable Archie Hapai,
the Honorable Stanley H. Roehrig, the Honorable Jack K. Suwa,
and the Honorable Yoshito Takamine, Members of the State
House of Representatives; and to the Honorable Stanley I.
Hara, the Honorable Richard Henderson, and the Honorable
John T. Ushijima, Members of the State Senate.
