I am here in support of Bill 132. This is about transparency and what is good for the entire island. Much has
been said specifically about the Hamakua land sale, so while this has our immediate attention, I do realize that
this bill is about all land sales.
In this morning's paper one Council member is quoted as saying, "I am a kanaka maoli. This whole island you
got to give back if we talk like that."
There was a disconnect for me because the kanaka maoli I know are concerned about keeping what land is left
in the hands of the people. From testimony I've heard, letters I've read, and people from Hamakua who I've
heard speak in person, concern has been voiced for keeping this land for the people.
Another Council member said, "We need to support the budget whether we agree with it or not." Here was
another disconnect for me. This has nothing to do with supporting the budget. I am disappointed that this
budget was passed on HOPE, hope that land will sell. But the budget has nothing to do with the people having
the right to know what might happen to their land.
You as Council members are here to serve the best interests of the entire island.
It has been said that the current land in question has sat idle over the years through different administrations and
Councils. I ask that you please be the Council that finally does something with this and other land that benefits
the people of this island.
We have a variety of land that can make this island truly sustainable.
