Subject: bill 132
Aloha Council members,
I am writing to support bill 132, transparency in land sales . My councilman is already in support of this bill,
thank you, Pete, but there are others who were either absent from the vote, or voted against it. I read recently
in the West Hawaii Today that a Kauai company bought up Hamakua acreage at about $1,000.00 per acre and
is now trying to sell it for 10 times that much!!!! Who is allowing our precious land to slip away from us, WHY is
it being allowed? YES we need transparency! Transparency has to BEGIN somewhere! Let it begin now,
stop the rampant sale of our lands at rockbottom prices to outsiders.
I wrote to Councilman Yagong a while back, suggesting that the Hamakua lands be leased or sold to local
farmers, and an arrangement be negotiated with local restaurants and hotels to buy local produce before
shipping it in from the mainland, therefore almost garaunteeing success of farming on Hamakua lands. If we
are going to be giving that land away at rock bottom prices, let's give it to the locals who want to work it, and
make a life for themselves!
Mayor Kenoi says that land use zoning already in place will do the job of Bill 132. 1 disagree. To quote todays
WHT, "the catagory (ag) is also flexible enough to allow big developments such as Hokulia."
Please, let's get back to representing the voice of the people, put the choice back in the peoples hands, before
our Island turns into a mecca for developers, like Maui or Oahu.
