Kanoe Case

Aloha Community Leaders,
My name is Kanoe Case of Hawaii Community College Student Government and I am speaking on behalf
of Hawaii Community College students, fellow community members, our youth, and our island ohana in
general who are in favor of passing this bill. We mahalo you folks for approving the first reading of the
Palamanui Bill. We are hopeful that construction can now take place soon especially after being up in
the air for so long. Plans for the construction of our West Hawaii campus are pa'a as far as infrastructure
and we await the okay to begin building our first structure. In meeting with our Chancellor we now know
more of the legalities holding up this issue but yet I still feel uncomfortable to critic on how to make this
happen. As a student our concern is to speak to encourage progress, not put down this issue for if we
do not speak up we will only be part of the problem. We sit here today to be part of the solution to not
just what's in front of us but for the bigger picture which is to create a stronger Hawaii through creating
opportunities that will encourage leadership. Our college will do this for our people. The opportunities
that will arise out of this can only be imagined until we have a permanent structure on the location and
land that was designated for us to build on to see through what can become a reality. We have plans to
incorporate numerous sustainability models that will be beneficial for our environment. There are
sacred lands that can be cared for by our students and culture can be perpetuated as well as
maintaining balance through offering various degree programs. If we could at least start working on our
college campus everything else will fall into place. In this time of recovery, we must prioritize and take
on our barriers in an order that will benefit our people not just the individual self. With that said please
approve our second reading so we can continue to rise together for our Keiki, our community, our aina,
for all.
