RE: Why Kona Needs a New College Campus
Aloha!
My name is Ilona O'Brien, a former student of West Hawaii College Culinary Arts
Program.
I am submitting this testimony in support of Bills 136 and 137 which will go before the
council for second reading on Wednesday, October 21, 2009.
I believe that Kona is worthy of having a new college campus for the following reasons:
1. The current campus structures are insufficient to support the growing number of local
and aspiring students who wanted to pursue college education.
2. This new college can be efficacious to the students, parents, school staff and
community as a whole.
3. Creation of academic programs available to working adults at times convenient to
them. It will be a "one-stop-shop" for adult learners to pursue undergraduate and
graduate degrees, professional certification and re-certification, continuing education
programs, and the General Education Degree (GED).
4. Availability of morning, afternoon and evening class schedules that will provide an
ideal arrangement for students going to school while holding down jobs. This will give
the student some real flexibility in how they manage their schedule.
5. The college can also be tied to the communities it serves. The school can be the best
venue to host "pack meetings" for public input on different vital issues
So there was clearly a need for a new campus, and it's about time to make it happen.
Mahalo for this opportunity to give my local perspective on the need for a new college
campus in Kona. I look forward with great interest and hope to the opening of the new
school and a great future for the next generation of students.
