Subject: My kuleana & The Hamakua Land Issue. Words from my heart: Please open
Aloha,
My name is Noelani Andeson, and i grew up in Kalopa on the Hamakua Coast. Born and raised, i cherish my
home deeply and have a profound respect for the people, the places, the atmosphere, the history, and the spirit
of where I am blessed to call home: Hamakua.
There is currently much activity over the land issue and the selling of this area, and as a young person ( today is
my birthday and im turning 22:) 1 feel it is my kuleana to express what I feel in my heart. Perhaps you will take it
to yours in the process of making these decisions within the next couple of days.
I am currently in Japan; traveling and exploring the world, and i am very lucky to be able to do so. In my college
experiences in both California and abroad in Mexico, Spain, and Nicaragua I was always able to adapt and be
blessed to meet wonderful, kind people. I tribute that to the fact that i grew up in such a nurturing place, which
taught me everyday the lessons of being a good human being that loves to live.
What does this have to do with the hamakua lands?
Everything.
The heart of a place is in its people and its land, and the two cannot function without one another. The land that
is being discussed to be sold should stay in the hands and hearts of the people who live here, the people born
and raised here, the people who plan to have kids and create a future at home. Looking ahead I hope that if i
have children they will have the same blessings i did, and hope that my friends children will also be able to grow
up surrounded by agriculture, gardens, trees, flowers, and loving people.
Please, please, please consider the prospect of these lands being sold from the perspective of the youth who
will ultimately be the ones who it affects. Mr Kenoi, please reconsider your request to have the authorit to sell
these lands. Council members, please look closely and ask yourself if this power should be in the hands of the
mayor. I believe this matter is one that belongs to the people as a whole, no particular individual.
Bill 132 is also very essential, not only as it applies to the Hamakua lands, but as it applies to all laws that are
passed on the Big Island, in Hawaii, in the USA, and in the world as a whole. It is critical that the people have
access to, as well as the education and ability to understand exactly what their government is doing. If we are to
cherish our home as it deserves to be cherished we must do it together. Kukulu Kumuhana - gather our
energies. Transparency should be inherent to any government law, just as we ask one another to be open and
honest in our every day lives, so should our government be open and honest with us, so that we can work
together to support one another in maintaining the beauty of the place we call home, in all it's dimensions and
capacities.
Thank you so much for hearing my words, and for feeling them from my heart to yours. I sincerely thank you for
all you do for our people currently and ask that you continue to serve righteously by allowing the people to be
your guides and reference.
