Aloha Council Members
I humbly ask you to please vote against the sale of Hamakua lands. We should take a trip
to the lands. Picture taken by Kalopa resident of the Koa trees currently on the lands
that are being considered for sale by the County.

Dear Honorable Council members:
I am writing to respectfully request that you vote against resolution 216-09 which
authorizes sale of certain former Hamakua Sugar Company, Inc. land.
As a kama ? aina of Hawai ? i Island I have always believed that Hamakua was the "bread
basket" of our island. Unlike Kona or Ka?u, Hamakua is blessed with soil and rain and
everything grows in abundance there. On the lands that you are considering selling are
mature Koa trees. We have a cash crop ready for harvest that could help the County
coffers.
We also know that Hawai ? i island has less than a seven day supply of many foods,
especially perishables. 90% of our food is still imported. We need to produce food for the
local market efficiently enough to replace most imports. At a recently luncheon Mayor
Kenoi said that the Big Island should not only be able to feed itself but also feed the rest
of the state. This land is a very large area of productive farmland and we must consider
the value it brings to our island. It represents a very special public resource.
Land in Hawai ? i is an asset that is essential to long-term economic security. Even in our
personal lives we understand the value of land. Once that land is sold and the monies
spent we will have nothing.
I urge the Council to please reconsider selling the Hamakua lands and instead make these
lands available for lease to farmers which will place us on a path to more self
sustainability and less dependent on imports.
