Council Members and Mayor.
I am writing to encourage you NOT to pass resolution 267-09. I realize that there are financial costs
associated with having council meetings in Kona. However, the long-term consequences of reducing
council meetings in Kona far outweigh these costs.
It is important for our council members to make the trip to the West side to interact with community
members who may have different life experiences than those on the east side of the island. Our
experiences & input is invaluable, as they provide additional perspectives about Hawai'i Island life.
We the people of Hawai'i are proud of our tolerance and diversity. We work hard to be inclusive and
decrease conflict. Reducing the number of council meetings in Kona will be viewed by Kama' aina &
new corners as intolerant, exclusive, & conflictual. The price of denying access and input has a greater
negative impact on our island life than the financial cost of meeting in Kona.
Please consider ways of reducing the $7,166.00 cost of each meeting before deciding to reduce access to
the county council members and opportunity to testify in person.
