Re: Resolution 277-09 and Closure of Pahoa Elections Office
Dear Chair Yoshimoto and Members:
Resolution 277-09, passed by the Council on December 2, 2009, amended Resolution 371-07
which authorized the County to enter into a five-year lease for the Pahoa Elections office. The
amendment was made so that other County agencies could use the specified office space as the
Pahoa Elections office was closed effective November 30, 2009.
During discussion on Resolution 277-09, Councilmember Dominic Yagong requested
information regarding use of the Pahoa Elections office by the public. The information below is
provided in response to this request:
PAHOA ELECTIONS OFFICE
LOG OF PUBLIC USE
January through October 2009
Voter Address Certificate of Registration Information Other
Registration Change Registration Application Request

In creating this log, staff recorded individual transactions not individuals served, so I am unable to
provide information as to the number of individuals using this office during the period specified, i.e.,

a person may have registered to vote and also requested a certificate of registration and both
transactions would be included in the log. Anecdotally, staff informs me that this was often the case.
At the December 2, 2009, meeting, Councilmember Yagong also requested that I discuss with
the Finance Department the possibility of changes to the office in order to accommodate Council
member Naeole-Beason, e.g., the construction of an internal office. On Thursday, December 3,
2009, I met with Finance Directory Nancy Crawford and informed her of the discussion regarding
Resolution 277-09. Ms. Crawford said she would take this request under advisement, but noted that
Councilmember Naeole-Beason is scheduled to move to the Old Pahoa Fire Station in May, 2010.
If I can provide any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Respectfully,
l'
