Mr. Chairman,
Ms Ford and distinguished council members. Thank you for inviting me here to give a statement.
My name is Wayne Braden, I live in Captain Cook. I am here to support Ms. Ford's efforts to dramatically
reduce the number of deaths and injuries as related to driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Bill 180 will help.. The consumption of alcohol in public must become more and more restricting in the future.
I am also here to acknowledge the excellent efforts of Dr. Sharon Vitousek and The North Hawaii Outcomes
Project with their recent report, concerning safe roadways in Hawaii. As well as the Mayor, police and
hundreds of dedicated community citizens, such as Mothers Against Drunk Drivers in Honolulu and Hilo.

The amount of time and money spent on this issue is very high. The cost in lives will never be repaid.

Personally, I am here because my wife Mayvelyn, our 17 month old baby Aliyah were innocent victims in a
car crash at Lako and Kuakini'on May 23rd of this year. Our baby Aliyah was killed. My wife received
serious multiple injuries and could be crippled for life. Mayvelyn is walking with the assistance of a cane and
a leg brace. The only good news is that we have recieved excellent care and assistance from the
community. With this love and her rehab-program Mayvelyn tells me she will be starting work Jan.1 st.
I am not alone in my misery. How many people were killed this year on the Big Island related to driving
drunk or drugged? What are the names of the people who have died? How many last year and how many
will die next year?
This is an emergency. A hundred families in Hawaii are impacted every year by this single issue. As a
community of families, in a moral society, we owe it to ourselves to bring the numbers to zero. And in the
mean time, we need timely prosecutions and judgment with severe consequences.
