COUNTY OF HAWAII - TERRITORY OF HAWAII
RESOLUTION NO. J;9' "f
PROVIDING FREE TRANSPORTATION TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS RESIDING THREE OR MORE
MILES FROM SCHOOL.
WHEREAS, millions of dollars are expended annually by the governments
of the Territory of Hawaii and County of Hawaii to provide our children with
an educational system which is considered to be among the finest in the
nation; and
WHEREAS, this excellent educational system, together with all its
facilities, should be made available and accessible.to all school children
in the County of Hawaii; and
tfflEREAS, there are strong indications that the current economic
situation in the County of Hawaii is causing undue hardships on a large
number of our high school students who have to travel great distances to
attend schools; and
WHEREAS, it will be a great loss to the County of Hawaii as well as
to the Territory of Hawaii if these students are compelled to leave school
just because they are unable to meet their transportation expenses; and
WHEREAS, the board of supervisors of the County of Hawaii is authorized
by law to provide free transportation to school children within school
age within the county; and
WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii currently provides free transportation
to students enrolled in the elementary and intermediate schools and residing
three or more miles from schools,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS of the
County of Hawaii that pursuant to the provisions of Section 146-5,
Revised Laws of Hawaii 1955, free bus transportation be and is hereby
provided to all school children who are enrolled in high schools and
residing three or more miles from schools for the duration of the current
economic situation, effective Apri-1f1, 1958.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk be instructed and directed
to send a copy each of this resolution to the county auditor, purchasing
agent and Department of Public Instruction, Hilo Division,
