V/ -6 REQUESTING THE TERRITORIAL BOARD OF HEALTH TO EXPEDITE A COMPREHENSIVE SURVEY AND ANALYSIS OF RADIO ACTIVE FALL-OUT ON THE ISLAND OF HAWAII. WHEREAS, the Twenty-ninth Session of the Legislature of the Territory* of Hawaii appropriated $28,000,00 for survey and testing of radio-active fall- out in Hawaii; and WHEREAS, the major,testing area has been thus far the City and County of Honolulu which has safe artesian well water; and WHEREAS, the Island of Hawaii_ has exposed surface rainwater and stream catchment areas as its major source of water; and WHEREAS, the Island of Hawaii is south of the Island of Oahu and therefore closer to the British bomb testing area; and. WHEREAS, the danger to its water supply is greater because of location and greater susceptibility to radio-active rain; and WHEREAS, testing of A-bombs and H-bombs is now going on at Christmas Island and at Eniwetok; and WHEREAS, no adequate testing program has been inaugurated-on the Island of Hawaii because of a limitation on the number of samples which can be sub- mitted. for analysis, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS in and for the.: County of Hawaii that the Territorial Board of Health be requested_.to expedite the setting up of testing equipment in the Territory so that accurate and comprehensive.analysis of radio-active fall-out can be conducted immediately and during the current bomb testing season. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Territorial Board of Health be requested to make adequate sampling of the water sources on the =Island 'f',Hawaii.with particular attention paid to the District of Kona, which has rain water as its only water source. I~ r 73 A BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk be and he is hereby authorized and directed to send a copy of this resolution to Dr. Richard K. C. Lee, President, Board of Health, and to the Honorable William S. Quinn, Governor of the Territory of Hawaii.
