COUNTY OF HAWAII TERRITORY OF HAWAII
RESOLUTION NO.

WHEREAS, accident studies by the Planning and
Traffic Commission, County of Hawaii, in the segment
of the Hawaii Belt Road between the 4-mile bridge and
the Olaa Casino during the years 1954-1956 indicate an
alarming number of motor vehicle accidents, and
property damage and deaths caused thereby; and
WHEREAS, the said high accident rate can be directly
attributed to the hazardous roadway due to its narrowness,
poor sighting distances and sudden sharp bends for the
existing traffic volume; and
WHEREAS, the construction of a new Hilo to Olaa
Roadway has not been included in the program by the
Territorial Highway Department for roadways in the
County of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the immediate construction of said roadway
is vital for the preservation of life and property of the
citizens of the County of Hawaii,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT"RESOLVED by the Board of
Supervisors in and for the County of Hawaii that the
Honorable Senators and Representatives from the Island
of Hawaii to the Twenty-Ninth Legislature of the Territory
of Hawaii, now assembled at Iolani Palace, Honolulu, Oahu,
be hereby respectfully requested to appropriate sufficient
funds for the immediate construction as a Territorial
project, a roadway from the 4-mile bridge--Hilo to Olaa,
District of Puna, County and Territory of Hawaii,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk be

instructed and directed"to forward a copy of this
resoltuion to each of the Honorable Senators and
Representatives from the County of Hawaii.
