COUNTY OF HAWAII - TERRITORY OF HAWAII
RESOLUTION NO.
L5
REQUESTING THE PASSAGE OF HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 31,
WHEREAS, the Congress of the United States has
authorized the extension of the Hawaii National Park
in the districts of Puna and Kau, County and Territory
of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the National Park Service is ready to
proceed with the construction of a multi-million dollar
highway from the end of the Chain of Craters Road down
toward Kalapana as soon as the lands are made available
to the Federal Government; and
WHEREAS, the condemnation proceeding to acquire the
necessary lands, which was instituted by the Commissioner
of Public Lands in 1949, is still pending in the Third
Circuit Court for lack of funds; and
WHEREAS, House Joint Resolution No. 31 authorizes
and directs the Commissioner of Public Lands to complete
the acquisition of lands by purchase, condemnation or
otherwise and makes an appropriation of $108,000,00
out of the general funds of the Territory for the
purpose of completing the acquisition of the lands
subject to condemnation; and
.WHEREAS, the passage of said Resolution No. 31
will make the extension of the Chain of Craters Road
to Kalapana a reality and open vast areas of scenic
attraction to the general, public,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF
SUPERVISORS in and for the County of Hawaii that the

Honorable Members of the Senate and House of Representatives
of the Twenty-Ninth Legislature of the Territory of Hawaii
now assembled at Iolani Palace, Honolulu, Oahu, are hereby
respectfully requested to exercise the.powers of their
good office to give favorable consideration on House
Joint Resolution No. 31,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County
of Hawaii be and he is hereby authorized and directed to
forward copies of this resolution to the Honorable
Members of the Senate and House of Representatives of
the Twenty-Ninth Legislature of the Territory of Hawaii.
