Dear Council of the County of Hawaii
I appreciate the opportunity to have my voice heard on the Decriminalization of Maraluana. I would like to share
some input from the perspective of a counselor who works with students who begin using and subsequently
abusing marajuana and how it affects them throughout their middle and high school career The use of marajauna
dramatically affects these students and impacts every aspect of their life.
I have seen students who are A and B students in middle school turn into either a high school drop out or barely
making it through school by 10th grade Their grades are dramatically affected as well as they begin to be the
students are engaging in many other risk taking behaviors such as breaking the law and getting suspended from
school and unsafe sexual practices. They have problems in their families with domestic violence and cycles of
poverty for generations. They lose their motiviation to succeed in life because all they can see is tomorrow and
when are they going to get their next high A student who has a promising life basically gives up where they
wanted to go. It becomes a way to cope with their life problems that is unhealthy I have seen students who use
this as a "gateway" drug and end up trying other drugs
Decriminalization of Marajuana will allow it to be more prevalent in the schools It will begin affecting more and
more students and bringing our Hawaii islands down not only in education but in every other area of life Please
reconsider this resolution and consider the affect on our children and families for generations
