Subject: Bill 193 relating to the reduction of plastic bags
Aloha Councilman Enriques and other Council Members
This letter is to encourage you to vote to ban the use of plastic bags in Hawaii County. In my
experience people can learn to remember to bring bags with them and most stores that already use
reusable bags have inexpensive ones available for purchase. I suspect that if folks had to buy a bag they
would be more inclined to remember their reusable ones. I do not believe that this bill will hurt tourism
on the island, rather it could be used to promote the Big Island as a "green island" and could be a
benefit. These bags are an unnecessary part of our waste stream and islands should be doing all they
can to reduce this waste stream.
Giving stores and customers one year by phasing in this ordinance will allow people time to adjust to remembering
their shopping bags and allow merchants to use up all of their inventory
Thank you for the opportunity to comment.
