The Office of Aging is supporting the Hawai`i Fire Department's Project Lifesaver Program that
began in 2007 with Council contingency funds. Project Lifesaver is a national program that
allows older individuals affected by dementia and at risk of wandering, to remain in their homes
rather than be institutionalized. Funds will be used to purchase global positioning system (GPS)
bands that track the individual wearing it in case they have wandered off.
Vicki Belluomini from the Office of Aging said these are federal funds derived from the Older
Americans Act. She said there are six current clients and the program nationally has a 100%
success rate in finding people.
Fire Department Battalion Chief Gerald Kosaki said these funds will provide up to 20 people with
two years of service, including the monthly battery and wristband change.
