A RESOLUTION CELEBRATING THE 20th ANNIVERSARY OF THE IRONMAN TRIATHLON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP AND EXTENDING CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES ON ITS SUCCESS , .. . . WHEREAS, the Ironman Triathlon World Championship ("Ironman"), consisting of a 2.4-mile ocean swim, a 112-mile bike race and a 26.2-mile marathon run, will be celebrating its 20th Anniversary in Kailua, Komi on October 3, 1998; and , . WHEREAS, in 1978, the Ironman began on 0' ahu as a challenge among 15 competitors, including Navy Captain John Collins, who waS instrumental in organizing the initial triathlon and is a continuing presence at the event; and WHEREAS, in 1980, the Ironman was first filmed and televised by ABC Sports, providing national coverage and increased interest; and ." . -- WHEREAS, in 1981:,' under the vision and leadership of Valerie Silk, the Ironman was. moved "from O'ahu to the beautiful Kona Coast, and, through her tireless efforts 'and commitmerit, the event grew in international stature; ,and WHEREAS, in 1982, as a direct result of the inspinng television coverage of Julie Moss' dramatic and courageous finish line efforts, seen by millions around ~e world, the Ironman reached a new turning point; and.,' . '0 WHEREAS, with the overwhelming international interest, Ironman qualifying races have been established around the world, bringing 1,500 athletes and many more family members and friends to Kona each year; and WHEREAS, the Ironman has won 7 Emmy awards and 4 International Monitor Awards for its television productions, providing dramatic visuals and inspirational stories of human triumph; and WHEREAS, over 50 million viewers in 100 countries annually now watch the Ironmap. broadcast on television; and WHEREAS, more than 7,000 residents of the BigIsland, many returning year after year, have' consistently demonstrated their dedication and commitment to the Ironman by volunteering their personal time and services to stage the event; and WHEREAS, the Ironman and its related activities have resulted in significant economic benefits to the State and County ofHawai'i, generating more than $5 million in local sales in the last year alone; and . . J . .,' " - ., ~ WHEREAS, the event has grown to a week-long celebration of community activities, including among others, a Kona Block Party, an Alzheimer's Benefit Walk-Run, a Sports Medicine Seminar, a sports product Exhibition, a Carbo-Loading Dinner, Awards Banquet, arid Volunteers Party; and . WHEREAS, the Ironman has demonstrated how partnerships between the local residents, businesses, and government have brought the community together and improved the quality of life for many people. . NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE HAW AI'I COUNTY COUNCIL extends its sincere congratulations and heartfelt thanks to the founders, organizers, and volunteers of the Ironman Triathlon World Championship on the 20th Anniversary of this world-renown event. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council extends its warmest aloha, best wishes and good luck to the participants, their families and friends for a safe and fun-filled week. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council expresses its deep appreciation to Navy Captain John Collins. for his initial organizational efforts and continued role in the tremendous growth of the Ironman. BE IT F.l1R1HE:R RESOLVED that the Council also expresses its deep appreciation to Valerie Silk for her vision. in bringing the Ironman to Kona and for her tireless efforts and personal commitment to increasing its stature worldwide.
