Written testimony to the county council:
I have taken the trouble to write to you today about the proposed ban on smoking in
vehicles if a child is present, and do so both as a concerned private citizen artdbalso s
the representative and President of the Conservative Forum for Hawaii. On M

Collectively we have tremendous concerns about this whole issue, as it is another of al ^,
many attempts by our government to restrict our nghts.
Currently, there has been an increasing trend by government at every level to'take aw'a'y f
our rights, piece by piece, and this is but the latest example. `, Fri
co
It is especially saddening to know that this occurs even at the level of the county couflQQil,
for this is basically at a level of neighbors taking away other neighbors rights, and
denying them even the courtesy of voting on the issue. After all, you are my neighbors.
Why do you have such low regard for the rights of your neighbors?
Why do you have such contempt for us that you feel both obligated and have the right to
run even the smallest details of our lives? •
Where does it stop?
Yesterday it was what kind of toilet and shower head we could buy, and our fight to use
, plastic bags for our purchases, tomorrow it will be restricting trans -fats in our favorite +
vM, . ^ restaurant foods, and the day after that it wil•be what kind of toilet paper we can buy. `•° •
This abuse of your power must stop.
We elected you to be our representatives, not to be our tunas.
Stop insulting your neighbors: we know how to live our lives responsibly without your
micro - management.
Stop demeaning us: we know what is best in the details of our own lives, not you
This must stop.
This is your opportunity, each of you, to take the moral high ground on this issue.
Forget the merits or not of this ban, and be responsible. I ask each of you to step up now
and state you will never ask to take away the rights of the citizens, your neighbors,
^" without our permission. These issues should only be decided by the
vote of the people, in a referendum, and by no other authority.
If you do not do so, you must know that the people are taking action to prevent you from
doing these things ever again by amending the county charter, through the Consent of
the Governed Acts (see conforhawaii.com for more.)
