No. 308 -10 Please adopt Resolution No. 308 -10 urging the DLNR to adopt proposals submitted by the West Hawaii Fishenes Management Council (WHFMC) The WHFMC is empowered by state law to manage our marine resources in West Hawaii through a process of public consultation and representation of all user groups However the WHFMC cannot make rules or pass laws - it can only submit the proposals to DLNR which must enact them. WHFMC has done a tremendous lob of reaching consensus on forward - looking measures to protect our resources for the fair use of all interest groups, but their hard work has been rendered useless by the DLNR's inaction. In the meantime we suffer indignities, such as the slaughter of a tiger shark and the display of its head on the sea wall at Honokohau this past Saturday. Tiger sharks are considered aumakua by some Hawaiian families, so this is akin to sticking somebody's grandmother's head on a stake atop the city walls This gratuitous slaughter of a revered wildlife icon is perfectly legal, but would not be if the DLNR had adopted the rules proposed by WHFMC Please urge the DLNR to do their job and act to protect our constantly degrading marine resources. Otherwise the concept of local resource management is just a bad joke.
